Ayurveda believes body odor is due to the presence of toxins in the body. The chief toxin that is responsible for the body odor is the ama, which is the buildup of undigested food material in the respiratory tract. If the ama is not controlled within time, then it would spread to other regions of the body. From there, it would be eliminated in the form of perspiration, causing severe body odors. The buildup of ama is due to an imbalance in the pitta dosha of the person’s body; but the body odor itself can be caused due to a vitiation of all the three doshas. All people smell when they don't bathe often enough. The interesting thing is that sweat doesn't smell when it first reaches your skin rather the smell comes only after bacteria or fungi on the skin's surface break down the fat in sweat to form chemicals that smell. Most sweat glands produce sweat that contains no fat, but the sweat glands around the breasts, genitals and armpits produce sweat that contains fat. Most people prevent body odor by washing these areas frequently to reduce the number of bacteria on the skin's surface.
Every process of the body has its purpose and this applies to smell to. If it wasn't for certain odors that alert us to some dangerous conditions and disorders we are oblivious to…we could die. What makes matters worse is there isn't one natural odor that's pleasant but having said that neither are they terribly unpleasant. If the body produces an abnormal odor (foul) caused by infection or other then it's not natural so see your GP. While most normal body scent is considered socially unlikable, there are several considered benign while others serve as attractants. Most noxious ones are created in the intestinal tract, the mouth, on the feet, and under the arms.
